10 ways to spot a fraudster on matrimonial websites

Getting duped by a prospective partner can be financially, mentally and emotionally draining. Look for these signs to avoid a heartache

Reluctance to come on video chat
The first sign, and a prominent one too. There will always be unwillingness (read excuse) to show their face. Or they will only show it as per their convenience - in solo - with no one around. This could be because they must be using a fake profile picture or must not want you to see their surroundings.

Expression of love in a short span
Even if love, at first sight, is a thing, trouble is when the person says it too soon and too often - as if to convince you soon. Love doesn’t happen in a click. Don’t be surprised if the marriage proposal comes soon - know that it’s only to gain your trust.

Not answering when you call
Fraudsters will usually call from multiple numbers or will never pick up when you call for reasons similar to reluctance to come on video chat.

Discussing YOUR financial status in first interactions
Finance is a personal thing and must not be discussed with anyone outside of your inner circle. PERIOD.

Not-so-social
Fraudsters refrain from having a social media profile or have few random friends on social media. This of course is different from those who are genuinely a recluse. If they are on social media, discreetly stalk it, looking for plotholes.

Sweet-talk
These profiles would propose marriage to gain trust and cook up stories on giving customary gifts to family members or being in need of foreign exchange or being in a medical emergency. That urgent need for money - even with a promise of the return - is a definite ‘red flag.’

Inconsistent behaviour
Ask questions and see if you can join the dots or catch lies if any. Inconsistent answers are never a good sign - it shows the person is hiding something regarding their age, interest, marital status, profession, and employment. Watch out for warning signs such as emotional imbalance or inappropriate character traits failure to answer questions are clear warning signs.

Meet the parents
If the prospect seems to check all the boxes of your perfect partner, involve family and friends. Hesitation on that front is proof that he/she is clearly not worth your time.

Profile Verification
Refrain from free matrimonial services and ensure you register on trusted matrimonial websites like The Wedlock that offers profile verification and background checks.

Your vigilance may save another innocent person from getting duped or hurt. If you come across a con profile, report these profiles to the website and also on the dedicated cybercrime portal ‘www.cybercrime.gov.in
